New research has brought mixed messages for those involved in home improvement. Not so good for trades perhaps, but a potential much-needed boom for DIY retailers.

With the days getting longer days and weather improving, seasonal upkeep is becoming a priority, according to a survey which found that 92 per cent of respondents said they planned to undertake DIY projects this Spring and 84 per cent insisting they prefer to carry out tasks themselves rather than hire a professional.

Outdoor maintenance ranks highest on the list of priorities, with almost 45 per cent identifying external spaces as their starting point, tasks such as tidying the garden and cleaning patios or driveways. Interior projects also remain popular, including painting and installing shelves or picture frames

The findings reveal that many homeowners are focusing on manageable improvements that can be completed quickly while still enhancing the appearance and functionality of their living spaces.

Home improvement: research suggests patios are a priority at this time of year

Jimmy Englezos, Senior Brand Manager at Thompson’s, the waterproofing brand which commissioned the research, said: “With the wet winter months having taken its toll, we’re not surprised that garden maintenance is high up on people’s priority lists, especially now that we’re seeing the return of bluer skies and warmer days.

“High winds and heavy rain can cause havoc to our gardens and outdoor spaces, as well as leading to the build-up of unsightly stains, dirt and algae that can become tough to clean – especially on hard-landscaping surfaces like patios.”

Good news indeed, given that as of the end of last year, official figures showed there were 5,840 hardware and home improvement businesses in the UK. And while the market is dominated by major chains such as Screwfix and B&Q, a massive 97 per cent are small, independent businesses or regional micro-chains.

The broader DIY retail sector saw revenue around £10.6bn in 2023, although independent retailers across all sectors were accounting for 84 per cent of store closure the following year, and that that was before the threat of business rates bill increases, thanks to cuts in government relief.

At least the Thompson’s research highlighted the fact that preparation remains a key consideration for DIY homeowners. Over two-thirds of respondents indicated they expect to buy materials or tools before they begin.

And similarly for the building and maintenance trades, the survey was limited to the tasks generally regarded as quick fixes.
